ALNAP – Global Forum on Improving Humanitarian Action branding

In June 2015 representatives from 200 humanitarian organisations, from over 50 countries, met in New York for Global Forum for Improving Humanitarian Action. The meeting was convened by the Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance (ALNAP), in partnership with the US Government, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the League of Arab States and the World Humanitarian Summit Secretariat.

ALNAP commissioned Soapbox for two pieces of design work: branding their suite of conference materials; and designing the post-conference report, ‘The State of the Humanitarian System’ (SOHS).

We first created a brand architecture that provided coherence across multiple outputs, and that represented the Forum’s global reach.

For the conference, we developed a distinct look that would make ALNAP’s printed materials stand out among the mass of handouts. Unconstrained by any pre-existing brand identity, we provided ALNAP with a bold, fresh look and feel.

Six months after the Forum took place, we designed and typeset the report and designed the accompanying microsite. A vital part of our work on this was to create a new treatment for graphs and graphics that was both accurate and accessible.

For ‘The State of the Humanitarian System’ report, we incorporated images from ALNAP’s photo competition. Keen to stress the shocking day-to-day reality of those suffering from war, disease, hunger and illness – and avoid the ‘glossy’ imagery of humanitarian work preferred by some picture outlets – ALNAP’s competition encouraged people on the ground to send in images that reflected their reality. The competition was a great success, with the outstanding entries featured in SOHS report launches and publications worldwide.
