John SchwartzFounder and managing director

Having built Soapbox up from a freelance design practice to a thriving communications agency, John divides his time between running the business, managing key accounts and working as creative director on some of our biggest projects. John began his career in publishing, running Politico’s bookshop and imprint before becoming publishing manager and designer at the IPPR, where he began developing his approach to policy communications. John is on the advisory board for On Think Tanks, where you can read some of his writing on the future of think tank communications.

Cormac BakewellDirector of strategic and digital communications

Cormac is Soapbox’s director of strategic and digital communications, and also oversees our editorial services and new business ventures. He spent 10 years working in policy roles at the CBI and two national public bodies before retraining as a journalist and subediting for a variety of newspapers and magazines. He studied law and French at Queen’s University Belfast and holds a diploma in translation from Institute of Linguists.

Rachel is Soapbox’s creative director, overseeing all our design outputs. In her own practice she is particularly adept in using typographic detailing to help guide readers through dense and complex texts. As director of operations, Polly oversees the daily running of the company, managing the finances, and generally making sure that Soapbox is running effectively and efficiently. Ged has over ten years’ experience in research, policy and campaign communications, and has a specific interest in helping clients to understand their core needs and identify the creative and technical approaches that lead to positive impact for them. After a few years in print publishing, Ged ‘went digital’ while working for the University of Oxford, and has since worked in digital, publications and campaign management roles for Oxfam GB and ODI, as well as spending five years as senior project manager and account director with a non-profit focused agency. Scott has been building websites since 2005, primarily for the non-profit sector, and joined Soapbox in 2018 as our head of web. Dan is an award-winning senior designer, with over 18 years’ experience with national newspapers and magazines. Before joining Soapbox he oversaw all design output for The Independent, which included leading the acclaimed 2013 redesign that won Design Week‘s ‘Editorial Design of the Year’ award. Dan’s experience makes him a specialist in long-form editorial design: making in-depth copy easy to read, but also visually compelling. A highly conceptual designer, his work has been recognised in both European and international competitions, and featured regularly in the UK design press.

Having previously carried out work for our clients in a range of disciplines, including information and publication design, in 2018 he shifted his focus to digital. His approach to digital design is evidence-based, user centred, and grounded in his knowledge of current best practice in UX design. Before joining the agency, Žiga completed an MA in information design at the University of Reading, building on his undergraduate degree in interactive communications at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Fathima is an enthusiastic developer with a keen eye for clean, considered and creative code. After graduating from the University of East London with a degree in IT and e-commerce, she joined Soapbox and now works on the back-end programming for content management systems, visualisation tools and PHP websites for our clients.

Rich CarterDesigner

After studying both publishing and design at degree level at Bath Spa University, Rich went on to work with international publishing houses, multidisciplinary design studios and as a freelance designer – focusing his attention on editorial design and branding. Rich joined Soapbox’s Bath studio in 2017 and when he’s not designing for clients, he’s usually tinkering away on his own side projects or collecting fonts which he’ll probably never use.

Sharon MahDesigner

Sharon, one of Soapbox’s designers, first trained as a lawyer at the University of British Columbia, Canada, practising in the fields of policy and research law for several years. She fulfilled two life goals when she moved to London and retrained as a graphic designer with a PGDip in design for visual communication from the London College of Communication. At Soapbox she specialises in publication design.

Following a history of art degree and a masters in graphic design, Sandhya spent several years working on branding and identity projects at Ogilvy & Mather, Chennai. She then pursued her love of typography and long-form publishing to study for a second masters in book design at the University of Reading, graduating in 2016. At Soapbox Sandhya focuses on print and digital publications, aiming always to produce designs that are effective, aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Angela WhitneyPartner

Partner

Angela is a partner in Soapbox. After completing a degree in visual communication in her native New Zealand, she spent four years working as an in-house graphic designer for an international charity and for a large insurance firm. She became Soapbox’s first employee in 2008 and was head of our London studio until 2014 when she returned to New Zealand. She continues to be an integral part of the agency, working from her antipodean home.
