John SchwartzFounder and managing director

Having built Soapbox up from a freelance design practice to a thriving design agency, John divides his time between running the business, managing key accounts and working as creative director on some of our biggest projects. John began his career in publishing, running Politico’s bookshop and imprint before becoming publishing manager and designer at the IPPR, where he began developing his approach to policy communications. He studied philosophy and politics at the University of Warwick. John is on the advisory board for On Think Tanks, where you can read some of his writing on the future of think tank communications.

Rachel BuntrockCreative director

Rachel is Soapbox’s creative director, overseeing all design outputs. In her own practice she is particularly adept in using typographic detailing to help guide readers through dense and complex texts. She is also interested in exploring the application of type as a design element in its own right – and in her spare time enjoys letterpress printing. After graduating with a degree in design for communication at the University of Reading, Rachel stayed on to complete a master’s degree in book design and joined Soapbox in 2009.

Cormac BakewellPartner

Cormac is responsible for Soapbox’s editorial services, as well as helping to pursue new business for the agency. He is a punctilious editor and is equally at home drafting pithy report summaries or generating ideas and copy for marketing materials. He spent 10 years working in policy roles at the CBI and two national public bodies before retraining as a journalist and subediting for a variety of newspapers and magazines. He studied law and French at Queen’s University Belfast and holds a diploma in translation from Institute of Linguists.

Polly O’HaraOperations director

Polly oversees the daily operations of the company, manages the finances, and generally makes sure that Soapbox is running effectively and efficiently. Autumn ForecastHead of studio, Bath

Soapbox’s resident classicist, Autumn has been with the company since its inception in 2008. Passionate about design detail and making policy content shine, she has worked on many high profile, award-winning publications. Autumn has been excited to work with NatCen on its renowned British Social Attitudes survey, and she regularly manages projects for other prestigious clients including Chatham House, Policy Exchange and IPPR. Autumn gained her Masters in Classics at University College London, having previously studied at King’s College London.

Anja PölkSenior designer

Anja works on branding and publications for our clients, combining an eye for typography, illustration and photography into strong conceptual designs with a clear message. She has a variety of design experience, with particular strengths in exhibition design and branding. She has worked with major cultural organisations in Berlin and London, and produced graphics and print materials for the OECD and German Green Party, among others. Dan is an award-winning designer, with over 18 years’ experience on national newspapers and magazines. Before joining Soapbox he oversaw all design output for The Independent, which included leading the acclaimed 2013 redesign – winner of Design Week’s ‘Editorial Design of the Year’ award. Dan’s experience makes him a specialist in long-form editorial design: making in-depth copy easy to read, but also visually compelling. Angela is a Partner in Soapbox. Tom started his career running media communications, first at the political think tank Demos in 1997 and then at the PR company Hobsbawm Macaulay, where he worked with social issues clients. In 2002 he set up his own small communications and design consultancy, the Press Company, before joining the Fabian Society as Editorial Director in 2006 where he commissioned, edited and published the Society’s pamphlets and books and was editor of the quarterly magazine, ‘Fabian Review’. Tom read English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. Tom worked full time at Soapbox from 2012 to 2018, first as New Business Director and later as Creative Director. He continues his association with the agency as a Partner, board member and advisor on strategic communications projects.

Megan studied typography and graphic design before completing an MA in book design, both at the University of Reading. She is often involved with Soapbox’s infographic and digital work, but still enjoys revisiting her typographic roots by working on reports and longer editorial content.

Graham MaySenior developer

Senior developer

Graham is a web all-rounder, able to switch between both design and programming tasks. His interests include user interface design, code optimisation and multi-device development. Graham previously worked as a designer and developer, creating e-learning courses. He graduated from Brunel University with a first-class degree in multimedia technology and design.

Ellen MatherLead branding designer

Lead branding designer

Ellen studied Graphic Design, both in her native North of England and in London. She joined Soapbox with a Master’s in Graphic Design from the London College of Communication, and prior to this a first-class degree in Graphic Arts. Her work philosophy is based on thorough visual research methods using a cross-disciplinary approach. She is involved in a variety of different kinds of work at Soapbox in print, digital and motion graphics. Outside Soapbox she has a keen interest in wider visual culture and sociology.

Project Manager

Florence oversees projects across digital and print, making sure they all run smoothly. Since her degree in applied communication at Newcastle University, Florence has worked in project management roles in medical education and financial services in New York and London, before joining Soapbox in 2018. She enjoys applying her organisational mindset to all aspects of life, including interior design, holidays, and packing as much fun into her spare time as possible.

Jasmine LindsayOffice Manager

Office Manager

Jasmine keeps everything running smoothly in the London office, which includes everything from bookkeeping to IT to facilities. She has qualifications from the International Association of Bookkeepers and a degree in religious studies form Canterbury Christ Church University, and has years’ of experience across creative industries including architecture and PR. Jasmine loves travelling, dancing and meeting new people, but has a strong dislike of lifts: if you’re ever in Soapbox’s Whitechapel building, Jasmine’s the one taking the five flights of stairs to the office.

Sandhya KrishnaJunior designer

Sandhya is an experienced designer, having worked on branding and identity projects at Ogilvy & Mather, Chennai, for several years. Following a history of art degree and a masters in graphic design, she pursued her love of typography and long-form publishing to study for a second masters in book design at the University of Reading, graduating with distinction in 2016. At Soapbox Sandhya focuses on print and digital publications, aiming always to produce design that is effective, aesthetic, appropriate and functional.

Han LiDigital designer

Digital designer

Putting the user’s experience first is at the heart of Han’s design process – whether that’s working with multidisciplinary teams or creating simple, yet functional designs, she will always bring a human-centric point of view to the table. She studied for a BFA in Graphic Design and a BA in Media and Communications and Art History in Christchurch, New Zealand, before beginning her career in digital design at cultural institutions in London and New York. Han joined Soapbox in 2018 as a Digital Designer.

Rich CarterDesigner

After studying both publishing and design at degree level, Rich has gone on to work with international publishing houses, multidisciplinary design studios and as a freelance designer – focusing his attention on editorial design and branding. When he’s not designing for clients, Rich is usually tinkering away on his own side projects or collecting fonts which he’ll probably never use.

Tom HampsonPartner

Partner

Tom started his career running media communications, first at the political think tank Demos in 1997 and then at the PR company Hobsbawm Macaulay, where he worked with social issues clients. In 2002 he set up his own small communications and design consultancy, the Press Company, before joining the Fabian Society as Editorial Director in 2006 where he commissioned, edited and published the Society’s pamphlets and books and was editor of the quarterly magazine, ‘Fabian Review’. Tom read English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. Tom worked full time at Soapbox from 2012 to 2018, first as New Business Director and later as Creative Director. He continues his association with the agency as a Partner, board member and advisor on strategic communications projects.
