ODI Development Progress content strategy

Development Progress is a research project based at ODI and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It works to identify, study and disseminate effective interventions in international development.

Soapbox was commissioned to review the project’s online content strategy and to develop information architecture and visual design for an updated Development Progress website.

The earlier version of the site had become a popular hub for differing perspectives on key issues in international development through its collection of blog series. The updated site needed to retain this content while providing a platform for the rolling publication of the project’s body of research and analysis work, which was to be supplemented and brought to life by a selection of animations, short films, infographics and photography.

Having pinpointed these requirements, we created a structure and design for the site that allows Development Progress to highlight key content – both as collections and single items – across a highly visual homepage and series of section landing pages. In addition, a system of theme- and country-based categorisation allows site users to browse the full content catalogue and go direct to items that interest them.

Soapbox has continued to create infographics for Development Progress, which it has recently started to produce as animated GIFs, as well as flat images.
